Since the lesser spirits were able to come through after him, I would think that he was trying to do it for them, but he and Raava were the only ones strong enough to handle it, at the expense of their own personal balances. Vaatu came through first, and Raava tried to protect him, but she failed. Their roles shifted, and Vaatu reacted badly and started seeking utter control over the world. While Raava initially did not want to have everything in the responsibility of a sole being, she eventually realized that in order to keep the world as "balanced" as possible, she would have to keep him restrained. After a long time, she deluded herself into thinking that she always had been restraining and fighting him.

Hum, curious. This picture also gave me another interesting theory or idea, one similar to this but also different (especially from the colors reversed). Very long ago, in some forgotten part of the past and before the very first Harmonic Convergence, Raava was once a dark spirit of light (red symbols and white color) and Vaatu a light spirit of darkness (blue symbols and black color), with the colors of their symbols totally reversed. After a strange change of energy that came from outside the planet, they experienced a great change, both elemental and of energy, with their nature and roles swapped. This affected both Vaatu and Raava, altering their appearances, giving each one 2 yin colors and 2 yang colors. On a temporary state out of control before recovering stability, Vaatu broke the barriers between the two worlds followed by Raava, with both of them accepting their new respective roles after that, as The Spirit of Light, Good and Order (Raava) and The Spirit of Darkness, Evil and Chaos (Vaatu), the opposed ones (the roles the universe wanted them to be for their world and history in the end), from then on, impossible to return back to what they were before, but always having the memories of what they once were. I have always liked that idea of some previous state of them, as some ancient evil light and good darkness.
